The Marquette Redmen hosted the Kingsford Flivvers in Great Northern Conference action tonight at Gerard Haley Field in Marquette. Marquette swept the doubleheader with a 5-3 win in game one and a 9-5 win in game two.
In game two, the Flivvers put up two in the first and three in the second to jump out to a quick 5-0 lead. But the Redmen didn’t panic and plated four in the third and then another five in the fourth to take the lead and put the game away.
The Flivvers out hit MSHS in the second game 11-7, but the Marquette pitching core came through again and sealed the victory. Jake Allard-Soucey started on the mound and surrendered nine hits and five runs in 1 1/3 innings worth of work. Brenand Kaski came in and finished the game going 4 2/3 and only allowing two hits and no runs while striking out six and walking two.
Kaski was also the leader at the plate with two hits, while Johnson, VandenAvond, Henriksen, Allard-Soucey and Mike Tarr II also added single markers in the win.
“We did a much better job tonight of moving the runners around with two outs. I was really proud of the boys being able to stay focused and come back in both games and get the wins,” said Head Coach Spencer Larson. “We still committed too many errors, but we were able to play through them and that’s what’s important.”
Next up, Marquette will travel to Gladstone on Friday (5/17) for another double header. First pitch in Gladstone is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
