Marquette Senior High School, along with Superiorland Kiwanis, are proud to announce that Sophie Bartlett (girls basketball) and Kennan Johnson (boys bowling) have been selected as the Athletes of the Month for March.
Sophie Bartlett is a senior student at MSHS and recently wrapped up a successful career as a member of the Redette Varsity Girls Basketball Team.
This winter, she played a large role in helping the team capture the Great Northern Conference championship before advancing to win an MHSAA District title as well. Her tireless work ethic and lockdown defense allowed Sophie to be named to the All-GNC Defensive Team and also earned her All-GNC Honorable Mention accolades. During the 2019 spring sports season, Sophie is again in her role as a defensive leader on the MSHS Varsity Girls Soccer Team, a position she has held for three years.
Sophie also performs at a high level in the classroom, where she owns a 4.20 GPA. Her academic achievement has made her a recipient of the Excellence in Education and Top Ten awards. In addition, she is a member of the National Honor Society.
In addition to participating in girls basketball and girls soccer at MSHS, she is also a member of the chorale and participates in the fall musical. Sophie’s post-graduation plans are to continue her education at Michigan State University.
Kennan Johnson is a senior student at MSHS and was a standout on this year’s boys bowling team. He is also currently helping lead the varsity baseball team to a successful spring season.
As a three-year member of the boys bowling team, Kennan’s natural ability was on full display this year. He placed second overall at this year’s MHSAA Regional Meet with a six game total of 1297 pins (216 average). His strong season in 2018-19 earned him a spot on the UPHSBC “Dream Team” as well as the UPHSBC High Average award.
Kennan’s work in the classroom is impressive as well, where he owns a 3.81 GPA and has earned the Outstanding Academic Achievement Award for each semester he as attended MSHS.
Outside of school, and in addition to bowling and baseball, Kennan enjoys mountain biking and hiking. He also volunteers with the American Legion, River Rock Lanes and Marquette County Exchange Club.
Kennan’s post-graduation plans are to attend Northern Michigan University next year and pursue a degree in Entrepreneurship.
