Marquette Senior High School, along with Superiorland Kiwanis, are proud to announce that Ericka Asmus (girls cross country) and Drew Gale (football) have been selected as the Athletes of the Month for September.
Ericka Asmus is currently a sophomore at MSHS and is a member of the Girls Cross Country team. She has been pacing the team this fall and has finished in as the team’s top performer in each race.
In the team’s U.P. portion of its schedule, Ericka has finished in the top-five in each of those five races, with two of those performances being 1st place finishes (Marquette Dale Phillips Invitational and Stephenson Dale Fountain Invitational). She also boasts a 6th place finish at the Pulaski Invitational and an impressive 45th place finish in the High School Elite Division at the Spartan Invitational.
Last year, Ericka was the girl’s champion at the Great Northern Conference Meet as well as a 2016 MITCA All-State Division I runner. During the winter sports season, Ericka competes as a highly accomplished member of the Superiorland Nordic Ski Team.
Academically, Ericka has a perfect 4.0 GPA. In 2016, she received the L.G. Kaufman Endowment Award as well as an Excellence in Education Award from UP Health System-Marquette.
In her free time, Ericka enjoys all outdoor activities and also devotes time to helping walk dogs and raise funds for UPAWS. Although they are not set in stone, Ericka’s post-high school plans could see her attend Michigan Tech University, where she has an interest in studying Environmental Science.
Drew Gale is a junior student at MSHS and is participating as a member of the Varsity Football team this fall. As a running back, Drew is in the midst of an absolutely stellar season for the Redmen.
Through seven games this season, Drew has accumulated an impressive 1,026 rushing yards (146.6 yards per game average) with 13 touchdowns to lead the team. His weekly performances have made him a consistent member of the U.P. Player of the Year watch lists. As a sophomore, Drew earned All-GNC Honorable Mention honors while participating on the varsity team.
In addition to his athletics accolades, Drew also earned an MSHS Academic Achievement Award for Spring 2017 as a result of his work in the classroom.
Outside of school, Drew enjoys hanging out with his friends, working out and writing. As for his plans after graduation, Drew wishes to pursue a collegiate football career while studying Computer Science or Sports Medicine.
