Multiple Teams · MSHS Tennis Summer and Fall 2017

Students interested in Coed Tennis:

Happy summer!

Last year was by far the best we’ve had as far as physicals and online registration.  I’d like to have everyone ready to go from day one, so please register online at (Athlete Registration is the sixth link)  This link will also have our schedule.  The registration and schedule may not be ready for a few weeks or so as Mr. Tiseo gets acclimated to the athletic department.

Physicals must be turned in to the athletics office before a student-athlete can participate.  There is a new form from the MHSAA this year – it will say pre-participation physical – consent – insurance on the top of the form.  Forms are available at the school (I’ll have a few if you’d rather catch up with me at the courts).  The new physical form must be signed and dated after 4/15/17.

We will use the Facebook page as a primary source of communication again this year.  If you are not part of it, please sent a request to MSHS Girls Tennis.  Information about rainouts, schedule changes and other team related news will be posted to the page.  The page is primarily for the girls (past and present); I’m not on it, so you’ll need to get a hold of me directly.

This year we will have open hitting on Mondays at 4:00 to 5:00.  There will be some instruction, but this will primarily be a chance to hit and keep in touch with teammates..

We will also be adding some weight training.  We will use the expanded weight room area and focus on knees, shoulders, and core strength.  More information will be on the Facebook page next week.  We have the weight room reserved from noon to 1:00 on Mondays and Thursdays.

As usual, we will be collecting Econo receipts for June and July.  Please bring them to the courts by the end of July.

Charlie, Heyden and I will be running our optional summer camps in the mornings, Charlie and Heyden will also be offering private lessons.  That information will follow.

Once we are into the season, practice will take place Monday thru Friday, times depend on the number of girls that are out.  I expect a tough competition for varsity spots, so we will have practices in the mornings and challenge matches for varsity during a separate afternoon session.  Practice will begin on August 9th and our first meet will be the following week.  The plan is to take the Friday before Labor Day off and return for the first day of school, tennis pictures, and light practice.  The rest of the schedule will be on the athletic department page.

If you have any questions, please email me at or call/text me, 906-250-3565.

Looking forward to a great season,

Derek Sandstrom

The Upper Michigan Tennis Academy coed camps will be begin Monday June 12th.  Clinics will be run by Charlie Drury and Derek Sandstrom, instructors with decades of experience from youth through collegiate levels and the current Marquette Senior High School coaching staff.  All events will be at the MSHS tennis courts; events are co-ed and open to ALL levels of tennis ability.  Intermediate and advanced groups will be organized by ability.  If there is a rainout, camp will run on Friday or fees will be prorated.  A parent or guardian needs to register the players for the first day of tennis.  Prior registration is prefered, but the day of event is okay.
